Queensland police are investigating the "brutal and violent" death of a man at a suburban Brisbane shopping centre in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Emergency services said they were called to the strip of shops in Manly West, in Brisbane's east, shortly after 2am on Sunday by a member of the public.

They received reports of a man having suffered critical injuries at the Trevally Crescent centre. The man, aged in is 40s, was declared dead when officers arrived.

'Brutal and violent'

Speaking to reporters on Sunday afternoon, Detective Inspector Wayne Francis said the man appeared to have suffered a "brutal and violent attack".

He said a 45-year-old man, who was taken into custody for "other reasons", was assisting them with their inquiries.
