Ben Foster has opened up on the day Sir Alex Ferguson told him his Manchester United career was over - and why, despite the pain, he still loved his former manager for it.

The goalkeeper joined United from Stoke City in 2005 after being spotted by the legendary Scottish boss playing on loan at Wrexham . He struggled to break into the first team for much of his time with the Red Devils, with the No. 1 spot occupied by the ever-reliable Edwin van der Sar .

Foster was initially sent out to Watford temporarily for his first two seasons to aid his development. Despite returning to United for the start of the 2007-08 campaign, he missed most of the season through injury.
