An investigation into a stretch of Welshpool Road will consider new traffic lights and treatments in a bid to address safety on the notoriously busy road.

City of Canning councillor Michelle Hurn called on staff at a meeting last week to conduct a traffic assessment of the road from the intersection with Hamilton Street to Wharf Street.

Cr Hurn said entering and crossing Welshpool Road from Hamilton Street and Wharf Street was becoming increasingly difficult and drivers were performing “risky and hazardous manoeuvres” to navigate traffic.

This included drivers turning left on to Welshpool Road before performing risky U-turns, cutting through the 7-11 service station to avoid congestion with the intersection of Treasure Road, and driving across the painted median strip.
