A new influenza vaccine administered by a nasal spray will be rolled out for young children ahead of the 2026 flu season, and medical professionals are hopeful it will increase vaccination rates and reduce influenza-related hospitalisations.

In their announcement of the intranasal FluMist vaccination on September 16, the Royal Australian College of GPs said the needle-free vaccine is "as easy as it is lifesaving", and Illawarra GP Dr Julie Blaze agrees.

The new vaccine will be available to children aged two to five.
