SOUTHPORT, N.C. ( WECT /Gray News) - Officials in North Carolina say a person of interest has been detained after someone opened fire on patrons at a waterfront bar, killing three people and injuring several others.

A spokesperson for the city of Southport said three people were killed when someone opened fire on patrons at a waterfront bar called the American Fish Company around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. The shots were reportedly fired from a boat at the Southport Yacht Basin.

Original reports from city officials said another eight people were injured in the shooting. However, Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said during a press conference around 1 a.m. Sunday that six people were taken to the hospital with injuries. Their conditions are unknown.
