PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- Two men were hospitalized after a shooting in Downtown Peoria on Sunday morning that left officers surrounded by "at least 50 individuals," police say.

Officers with the Peoria Police Department were called at 4:43 a.m. to the intersection of Monroe and Main Street to a report of a person shot, said police spokeswoman Semone Roth.

When officers arrived, they found a man had been shot. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, she said. They also later learned a second man was taken to the hospital but was listed in stable condition.

During their investigation, Roth says police were surrounded by "at least 50 individuals who were interfering with police and emergency medical personnel."
