MONCKS CORNER — A longtime firefighter and department leader died in the line of duty in the early hours of Sept. 28, the Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department announced “with profound sadness.”
Deputy Chief Jimmy Townsend died at 3 a.m. on Sept. 28, according to a statement the department posted on its social media accounts. It was not immediately clear what caused Townsend’s line-of-duty death.
His passing leaves a void in the community that “can never truly be filled,” the department said.
Townsend started his career in 1990 and dedicated more than three decades to the fire service.
He remained a steadfast leader, mentor and friend throughout the years, and was a “cornerstone” of the local and state-wide firefighting community, according to the department.
