Poor old Grizzly Peak. She’s a stunning and voluptuous mountain, as seen from Midway Pass. But, at 13,997 feet, she’s a mere 36 inches short of being a 14er. Sorry, Grizzly, you’re not in the club.

Her north-facing flanks are snowy already in the middle of this feast of autumnal color. I was driving down from Independence Pass into town last Sunday and as I was in the North Star area, the colors on the backside of Aspen Mountain looked like a rainbow.

It’s a gleeful time of year. But, once again, there’s a death in the family.
