(NEXSTAR) — Three people are dead, including the suspect, and several others sustained injuries after authorities say a man drove through the front doors of a Michigan church, fired an assault rifle at the thousands gathered inside, and deliberately started the building on fire.

Authorities said Sunday afternoon that they believed more victims could be within a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Grand Blanc, Michigan, who became trapped by the blaze.

Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said shortly before 10:30 a.m. ET, a 40-year-old man from nearby Burton, drove his vehicle through the front doors of the LDS church. He then exited the vehicle — which appeared to
