A framework has been developed to track and improve the treatment of dementia patients in aged care.

Researchers at the University of Queensland developed the guidelines after consulting with stakeholders including health care professionals, aged care providers and people experiencing dementia.

Professor Tracy Comans, from UQ's Centre for Health Services Research, said 50 per cent of people living in residential care in Australia had some form of dementia.

Despite this, she said there was a lack of data relating to four key measurements for the care of people experiencing dementia, including dignity, pain management, hygiene and meaningful activities.

"We're not actually measuring the things that are important to people living with dementia and their carers," she said.
