GENESEE COUNTY, MI – Police have identified Thomas Jacob Sanford as the gunman who opened fire during a worship service Sunday at a church with hundreds in attendance.

Investigators still do not know why Sanford, 40, of Burton, rammed his truck into the building before shooting those inside, Grand Blanc Township police Chief William Renye told reporters Sunday night.

Sanford, armed with an assault rifle, was fatally shot after exchanging gunfire with police.

Renye, flanked by other law enforcement officials, provided additional details about a shooting that left two churchgoers dead. Seven people wounded are in stable condition and one person remains in critical condition, Renye said.
