GENESEE COUNTY, MI – Two people were killed, and eight others were wounded after a 40-year-old man unleashed horror inside a church when he opened fire on hundreds in attendance. The gunman is also deceased.

Grand Blanc Township police Chief William Renye released additional details Sunday night, hours after a gunman fired an assault rifle in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Police identified the shooter as Thomas Jacob Sanford of Burton.

Sanford died in a shootout with police. A motive has not been determined.

Officers responded to the church, 4285 McCandlish Road, around 10:25 a.m. for reports of an active shooter.

Police said Sanford drove his vehicle through the church’s front door while the service was ongoing. Sanford exited his vehicle and began shooting.
