A Hike in Prison Phone Call Costs
Securus Technologies, the company that runs Oklahoma's prison phone systems, dropped prison phone calls from 14 cents a minute to 6 cents a minute following an FCC order from January 1st.
But in late August, the company reversed course, announcing it would return to the 14 cents a minute. The Oklahoma Department of Corrections points to a recent FCC decision that gives companies until 2027 to comply with lower rates.
Families Blindsided
Some families say they weren’t warned, with several finding out after being charged. Angel Miller’s brother, Jonathan, is currently incarcerated at the Dick Conners Correctional Center near Hominy, serving a 10-year sentence for leading authorities on a high-speed chase in a stolen car in January 2024.
