PORTSMOUTH, Va. — One person was taken to the hospital after a fire in the 4500 block of Caroline Avenue in Portsmouth Sunday afternoon.
The fire was reported just after 2:30 p.m., according to a spokesperson with Portsmouth Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services.
Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the home when they arrived. Three adults were taken to the hospital for evaluation. Two dogs escaped the home, and crews found a cat inside and provided it oxygen before returning it to the homeowner.
The fire is under investigation by the Portsmouth Fire Marshal’s Office and Portsmouth Police Department, officials said.
No additional details were available Sunday afternoon.
