When 63-year-old Diana Erdman planted her first crop of garlic in 2020, she never imagined it would blossom into a passion that earned her the nickname “the Garlic Queen" from close friends, while shining a light on one of the kitchen’s most underrated staples.

“It was actually my stepdaughter who came up with the idea,” Erdman recalled.

“She goes, ‘You know, garlic would be a really fun one to do.’”

The two researched varieties and chose to focus on Red Russian garlic, a hardy type known for its reliable yields and bold flavour.

“I just find it’s a reliable stock and I have really good results with it. Don’t mess with what’s working,” she laughed.
