BELTON, Texas — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s soccer team is rallying behind one of its own as senior midfielder Jayme Dowell’s father begins his fight with prostate cancer.
Jimmy Dowell, a longtime coach and former standout player at the University of Tulsa, was diagnosed in May. He is set to begin radiation treatments Oct. 14.
“You never like to hear the ‘C’ word, ever,” Jimmy said. “The rough part is coming.”
For Jayme, who has grown up on the soccer field with her father always nearby, the diagnosis was a shock.
“It was kind of just a shock because that’s your dad,” she said. “He’s Superman.”
