Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has touted the success of the her government’s machete ban and amnesty program despite multiple machete attacks occurring in the past week.

The possession, ownership and sale of machetes have been banned in Victoria since September 1, with the new law coinciding with a three-month amnesty for people to safely dispose of the now prohibited weapons at one of 45 machete disposal bins across the state.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Premier Allan said the government’s ban and amnesty program were “already working”.

“We were the first state in Australia to move to ban machetes and get these dangerous weapons off our streets, and the ban on machetes, the ban on possession of machetes, is already working,” Premier Allan said.
