Detroit's next mayor can take one transformative step forward to grow our population and keep residents from leaving: Focus on housing policy, and how people live in Detroit.

Simply put, there’s too much land zoned exclusively for single-family residential housing in Michigan’s largest city.

While that may have served a post-industrial Detroit, we must dramatically rethink zoning ordinances, moving away from sprawl and toward prioritizing dense communities and expanding sustainable green space.
