A man accused of driving a LandCruiser through the middle of a shopping centre and allegedly planning to flee interstate is now seeking bail.

Giriwa May, 27, is accused of ramming a police car and smashing through glass doors at Melbourne ’s Northland Shopping Centre, narrowly missing shoppers, in June.

Police claimed they were able to quickly identify the accused because of his distinctive neck and arm tattoos and his basketball team cap.

He was arrested in East Melbourne the following morning and applied for bail on Monday.

Investigators are pushing back, arguing he is a flight risk.

They claim text messages on his phone revealed a plan to flee across the border.
