Europe's Ryder Cup team celebrated their victory over the United States with some light-hearted banter directed at President Donald Trump. The match, held at Bethpage Black in New York, saw European players, particularly Rory McIlroy, face verbal abuse from spectators. In a video shared on social media, the European team was seen chanting, "Are you watching, are you watching Donald Trump?"
Trump, an avid golf enthusiast who attended the tournament's first day, responded on his Truth Social account, saying, "Yes, I’m watching. Congratulations!"
Despite a strong comeback by the United States during the singles matches on Sunday, it was not enough to overcome Europe's early lead. The final score was 15-13 in favor of Europe, allowing them to retain the Ryder Cup trophy.
On Saturday, McIlroy expressed frustration at the heckling he endured while attempting to make putts. When asked if the crowd's behavior crossed a line, he stated, "When you play an away Ryder Cup, it’s really challenging. It’s not for me to say. People can be their own judge of whether they took it too far or not. I’m just proud of us for being able to win today with what we had to go through."
Shane Lowry, McIlroy's playing partner, also experienced crowd hostility. He described the atmosphere as "intense" and remarked, "It was like something I’ve never experienced."
The Ryder Cup, known for its passionate fans and competitive spirit, showcased both the skill of the players and the challenges of playing in a hostile environment. The European team's victory adds to their legacy in the tournament, while the U.S. team will look to regroup for future competitions.
