A 37-year-old man is facing a charge of impaired driving causing death after allegedly striking and killing a 91-year-old man in Corner Brook just after midnight on Monday.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says the incident happened on the O'Connell Drive Extension near Georgestown Road at 12:30 a.m. The elderly pedestrian was sent to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver, from Benoit's Cove, was arrested at the scene. His vehicle was seized and his driver's licence was suspended.

He's being held in custody awaiting a bail hearing in provincial court.
