(KRON) -- Multiple agencies in San Mateo County are investigating the death of an incarcerated woman Monday morning at the Maple Street Correctional Center in Redwood City.

The 31-year-old woman, who was not publicly identified, was experiencing “what appeared to be a medical emergency” around 6 a.m., the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said. Personnel working at the jail, including on-site medical staff, started lifesaving measures while EMS was dispatched. Despite efforts, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“The general population pod the woman was housed in received a routine safety check a short time prior,” the sheriff’s office noted.
