New Jersey had among the highest numbers of people of color nationwide, according to the latest Census figures.
New Jersey ranked 10th in the nation for the number of residents of color. Hawaii, California and New Mexico had the largest populations of brown, Black and Asian people.

The number of nonwhite residents rose from about 3.9 million in 2014 to about 4.8 million in 2024. This means that approximately 1 in 2 New Jersey residents, or about 50%, were people of color as of 2024. The figures come from the one-year American Community Survey, which provides a snapshot of how people in the nation live.
Hispanic residents were the largest minority group, followed by Black and Asian residents.
