Attorneys for convicted killer Victor Tony Jones are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to halt his scheduled Tuesday execution in Florida, focusing heavily on abuse Jones suffered as a child at a notorious state reform school.
The attorneys Saturday filed a 36-page petition and a request for a stay of execution at the U.S. Supreme Court, three days after the Florida Supreme Court rejected their arguments . Jones, 64, is scheduled to be executed at Florida State Prison for the 1990 murders of a couple in Miami-Dade County.
The petition cited abuse Jones suffered as a child at the state-run Okeechobee School and compensation he received under a program approved last year by the Legislature to make payments to victims of abuse at the Okeechobee School and another now-shuttered reform school,
