Israel and the United States have reached a significant agreement aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Gaza. US President Donald Trump described the day as "historic" after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. Trump announced a 20-point peace plan designed to establish what he termed "eternal peace" in the Middle East.
The plan includes the formation of a new governing body called the "Board of Peace," which will be led by Trump and include experts and representatives from Palestine, as well as former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. Trump emphasized that Hamas and other terrorist groups would not be involved in this governance structure.
Key elements of the proposal include the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas, with a deadline of 72 hours for compliance. Trump expressed confidence that Hamas would accept the deal, stating, "I feel we will have a positive answer from Hamas." He also mentioned that if Hamas rejects the agreement, Israel would have the full support of the US to take necessary actions against the group.
Netanyahu praised Trump as Israel's "greatest friend" in the White House and reiterated the importance of returning all hostages. He stated, "This can be done the easy way or it can be done the hard way, but it will be done."
The plan outlines that Gaza will be governed by a temporary, technocratic Palestinian committee responsible for public services. It also includes provisions for the demilitarization of Gaza and a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces. Trump noted that the proposal aims to ensure the safety of both Israelis and Palestinians, stating, "There are many Palestinians who wish to live in peace."
In addition, Trump hinted at the possibility of Iran joining the Abraham Accords, which normalizes relations between Israel and several Muslim-majority nations. He expressed optimism about future diplomatic developments in the region, saying, "Who knows, maybe even Iran can get in there."
This agreement marks a pivotal moment in the efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region, with both leaders expressing hope for a positive outcome.
