Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (8) throws a pass during the first half against the Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

It's been a nightmare start to the season for the Baltimore Ravens – and they still haven't woken up.

They blew a 15-point lead late in the fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 before righting the ship with a blowout win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 2. Then came another fourth quarter meltdown against the Detroit Lions in Week 3, followed by a blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4.

While things aren't looking good for the Ravens with a 1-3 record in the standings, the biggest potential loss doesn't show up there.

Two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson departed early on Sunday against the Chiefs with a hamstring injury. Already facing a 14-point deficit in the third quarter, the Ravens made the switch to Cooper Rush in what was a fairly bizarre scene.

There wasn't a definitive moment where Jackson was hurt, but instead a grand reveal coming out of a commercial break. Now the focus shifts to his availability for Week 5.

Here's what to know about Jackson's injury and how long he might be out.

How long is Lamar Jackson out?

Jackson's timetable for a return is not known. Ravens coach John Harbaugh declined to provide a specific update on the quarterback's status during a Monday media availability.

"We got a pretty good feel on all the injuries, with the different guys right now where we're at," Harbaugh told reporters. "Really not commenting on those things today. We'll comment on them later in the week, a little bit more."

That said, Harbaugh did confirm Jackson would not have been able to finish Sunday's game even if the score had been closer.

"There was no way he was gonna go back into the game," Harbaugh said of Jackson. "The injury precluded it."

"If he could have gone in the game, he would have been in the game," Harbaugh added. "That's how Lamar is. So, I can assure you he would not have been able to go back in the game under any circumstance."

Harbaugh's comments align with those he made after the game, at which point he did not shed any light on Jackson's injury but noted his belief none of the injuries suffered on Sunday are season-ending.

"I don't have any updates on the seriousness of the injuries right now," Harbaugh told reporters. "There's nothing that looks like its season-ending by any stretch for any of those guys, but we'll have to look at those injuries tomorrow and see where we're at."

Jackson was listed as questionable to return and never officially ruled out by the team, further clouding his status. Hamstrings can be a tricky injury to deal with, meaning the focus will be on Wednesday's initial injury report.

Lamar Jackson injury update

Jackson exited the Ravens' Week 4 loss with a hamstring injury and did not return.

The quarterback was sacked in the third quarter and was removed from the action on the following drive. Rush took over and finished out the game for Baltimore.

Ravens QB depth chart

Unsurprisingly, the Ravens aren't flush with quarterback depth behind Jackson:

  1. Lamar Jackson
  2. Cooper Rush
  3. Tyler Huntley (practice squad)

If Jackson is forced to miss time, Rush figures to step in as the starter. He has appeared in 40 games across eight seasons, starting 14 of them. The longtime Dallas Cowboys quarterback owns a 14-5 record as a starter and has been serviceable over the years.

Huntley might be on the practice squad, but he also comes with a wealth of starting experience – filling in as a starter for the Ravens during Jackson's previous absences.

Nothing can replace Jackson's impact if he's out for any length of time. However, they do have enough to stay afloat until the quarterback can nurse himself back to full strength.
