CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — One of the longest-running cases in Harrison County Circuit Court history continues is over, at least for now.

The petition for writ of habeas corpus from Ennis Charles Payne, 50, of Clarksburg, challenging his imprisonment, had been pending since 2017, but it was dismissed Monday afternoon by Harrison Circuit Judge D. Andrew McMunn.

Assistant Prosecutor Andrea Roberts, for Prosecutor Rachel Romano, represented the state.

Payne is serving 15 years to life for felony murder and conspiracy, unable to overturn his convictions with prior appeal attempts to the West Virginia and U.S. Supreme courts.

The writ is likely Payne's last realistic chance to change his outcome, and there's the possibility he will appeal to the state Supreme Court.
