One man is dead and another seriously injured following a two-vehicle crash on Vancouver Island's Highway 4 Saturday afternoon.

Oceanside RCMP says an eastbound Honda Civic "appeared to have lost control on a series of curves where it impacted with a westbound Chevy Impala."

The Civic was "engulfed" in flames and the driver died on the scene, while the driver of the Impala, a 70-year-old man from Alberta, was taken to hospital with "potentially life-threatening injuries."

Police have not confirmed the current condition of the injured driver, as of Monday morning.

RCMP have not identifed the person killed in the crash, but family members say it was 20-year-old Nick Antoine.
