BROOKLYN — Firefighters pulled an 89-year-old man from a burning apartment on 91st Street in Fort Hamilton Saturday afternoon , saving him as fire engulfed his second-floor home, reports ABC News .

The blaze broke out around 3:30 p.m., sending thick smoke and flames out building windows. Crews reached the man, who uses a walker, quickly, carrying him down on a stretcher as medics began treatment. He was taken to Staten Island University North in serious condition.

Neighbors described the victim as a veteran known for playing the national anthem from his window during school dismissal. Several other residents were displaced by the fire, which remains under investigation by fire marshals.

The man’s name has not been released.
