DANVILLE, Va. — The man accused of setting a Danville city councilman on fire is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, authorities said.

Shotsie Buck-Hayes is charged with first-degree attempted murder and is being held in isolation at the Danville jail, where staff monitor him closely to ensure he does not pose a risk to himself.

Police said Buck-Hayes poured gasoline on Councilman Lee Vogler and set him on fire. Vogler suffered burns on more than half of his body.

Investigators described the attack as personal and said it was not politically motivated.
