BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Over the past few days, reports of dogs getting ill have spread across the state.
Dr. Ai Takeuchi, co-medical director at Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic, said Parvovirus has become more active in her clinic over the summer months into Fall.
The infection is extremely contagious for dogs and sometimes fatal.
She told WABI it’s common to see the virus among puppies this time of year, but it’s become persistent.
It’s commonly seen among puppies or dogs who are not vaccinated.
“Parvo likes the cells in your body that replicates really fast so the lining of your stomach intestinal tract and then the bone marrow,” said Dr. Takeuchi.
