Eight schools in the Houston area were among the more than two dozen "Lone Star Ribbon Schools" named Monday by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as part of a new program to replace the National Blue Ribbon Schools initiative.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Education scrapped the nationwide program that recognized high-performing campuses across the country. Abbott announced what he described as the inaugural group of Lone Star Ribbon Schools, which included 26 public schools and two private schools.
