HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania School Boards Association is worried the lengthening budget standoff in the Capitol will halt $1.3 billion in payments to schools set for October, while counties believe it may cause a number of them to deplete reserves and ponder layoffs, furloughs, and service cuts.

Those messages were voiced in the Capitol on Monday, the 91st day of fiscal 2025-26 without a state budget. Meanwhile, the state House approved a bill for a new program to provide state-run landslide and sinkhole insurance. The concept is especially desired in southwestern Pennsylvania, which Democratic Allegheny County Rep. Emily Kinkead said has “one of the highest rates of landslides in the nation.”

The action came during the first House voting session in more than a month.
