Republican and Democratic leaders emerged from a high-stakes meeting at the White House on Monday and traded blame for a possible government shutdown that could take place in a little more than 24 hours.

The meeting, hosted by President Donald Trump, produced no breakthrough to keep the government’s lights on, and Vice President JD Vance predicted a shutdown this week.

“I think we’re headed to a shutdown because the Democrats won’t do the right thing,” Vance, flanked by Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said after the meeting.
