LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) - Years of fighting between the City of Long Beach and FEMA over the city’s derelict harbor have finally come to a close. Monday, Mayor Tim Pierce updated WLOX News on the agreement and the status of the Gateway Project.
FEMA will give Long Beach $3.6 million to make repairs on the inner harbor, replace piers and install flow-through decking. The deal came with a compromise: Long Beach will rebuild with wood pylons instead of concrete.
“That was the part we couldn’t put an end date on it, because we never had the FEMA money,” Mayor Tim Pierce told WLOX News. “We’ve completed the east bulkhead, southeast bulkhead. We have contracts out on the southern quay and the interior bulkhead. Those are underway right now.”
