WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- Norfolk Southern is conducting an investigation following a trail derailment in the Cordova area early Sunday morning.

According to Norfolk Southern, there were 23 railcars involved. No injuries were reported.

James Reid lives just in front of where the railcars derailed. They created a mess in Reid's backyard, waking him up in the middle of the night.

“It probably lasted maybe 10, 15 minutes,” Reid said, “It almost sound like thunder is what it sounds like to me.”

There were no spills or leaks involving hazardous materials, Norfolk Southern stated.

“They had mixed freight," said Cordova Mayor Jeremy Pate. "I don't have any idea exactly what they were carrying. I just know that they told me no hazardous material."
