In America, government transparency isn’t optional – it’s foundational. Public officials conduct public business using public money in public facilities where the public can watch. At least, that’s how it’s supposed to work.
But in Geauga County, officials are embracing a different approach: operating in the shadows while telling taxpayers to mind their own business.
“Earlier this month, the county commissioners voted to reaffirm a contract that lets the sheriff house federal immigration detainees in the county jail. But they won’t show anyone this agreement,” explained Leila Atassi on Today in Ohio , cleveland.com’s daily news discussion podcast. “They won’t show the press, they won’t show the ACLU, not even after Ohio’s attorney general clarified that commissioners, not sheriffs, are
