TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The heat has been setting records in Tampa this year, and yet another record was nearly broken on Sunday.

Tampa tied the daily high temperature record of 95 degrees on Sunday, Sept. 28, according to the U.S. National Weather Service in Tampa Bay.

The record was first set over six decades ago on Sept. 28, 1961.

In July, the Tampa International Airport reached 100 degrees for the first time since records began in 1890. The new record ended a long-standing streak that made Tampa one of the few major cities in the U.S. to never officially hit triple digits.

The city also had its highest heat index on record just days after the temperature hit triple digits.

However, temperatures will likely begin cooling down starting Monday.
