BINGHAM -- A bridge in Somerset County has been officially named in honor of a former sheriff.

Over the weekend, the bridge that carries Route 201 over Austin Stream in Bingham was formally dubbed the Barry A. Delong Bridge.

According to the Somerset County Sheriff's Office, Barry Delong served as a trooper with Maine State Police for 20 years, patrolling Bingham, and as a detective investigating child abuse cases.

Delong was elected sheriff of Somerset County in 1995 and served in that position for 20 years.

The Sheriff's Office said he had a positive impact on many families in Somerset County, and it was fitting to dedicate the bridge to a man who served the citizens of Somerset County for four decades.
