WASHINGTON C., Iowa (KCRG) - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources released more details about a hunting accident that killed a teenager this weekend.
Captain Shawn Meier of the DNR’s Law Enforcement Bureau said 17-year-old Carson Ryan was squirrel hunting with a group when he was accidentally shot in the back of the head by a .22.
“Hunting accidents are tragic, and you wish to bring them all back,” said Captain Meier.
Meier said he was still learning the details, but doesn’t see this as anything other than a heartbreaking accident. He said Ryan had gotten up to move, and it was his movement that led one of the hunters to believe they were shooting at a squirrel. He said the environment in which the hunters were operating played a role in the accident as well.
