Melbourne have confirmed the Christian Petracca sweepstakes are alive while setting the stage for tense negotiations on their under-contract Norm Smith medallist.

The 29-year-old travelled to Adelaide on Monday with wife Bella and manager Anne Scullie and underwent a medical at the Crows but he has also reportedly talked with Gold Coast coach Damien Hardwick.

The escalation came after Petracca met with the Demons last week and “expressed his desire to explore a fresh start”, according to club boss Paul Guerra.

“Christian is contracted for a further four years and is a once-in-a-generation player,” Guerra wrote in a statement on Tuesday.

“With this in mind, any decision regarding Christian’s future will be made in the best interest of the Melbourne Football Club.
