BEAUMONT, Texas — A Southeast Texas music education program is asking for community support as it works to replace aging instruments and continue opening doors for students.

Instruments of Southeast Texas is a nonprofit that welcomes homeschool, public and private school students to participate in its ensemble. The program serves 53 students and emphasizes not only music but also life skills.

Head Director Vanissa Mills said the mission is about removing financial barriers.

"We're opening doors for students who don't have access to an instrumental music education, don't have access to learning an instrument, and there's many children in our community, believe it or not, who don't have access to learning an instrument, so we see it as providing the gift of music to students," Mills said
