On Monday, Vice President JD Vance told the media the country is heading toward a government shutdown.

The shutdown could happen due to both parties failing to agree on the spending bill, which could impact over 20,000 federal civilian employees in New Mexico, according to a Congressional Research Service report from 2024.

Michael O'Donnell, the director of the University of New Mexico's Bureau of Business and Economic Research, said, "A shutdown shakes the confidence that people have in the federal government."

He explained that federal workers could be categorized as essential and continue to work, but many others classified as non-essential might experience disruptions in federal funding or their paychecks.
