Business owners have expressed concern over the decline of one of the most popular streets in Sydney.

Newtown's King Street, a 2.7km stretch from Broadway to St Peters Station, continues to be a hotspot for those looking for a night out on the town or for unique fashion stores - but certain businesses appear to be struggling along the commercial hub.

According to a count by realcommercial.com.au, as of September 2025 there are 33 empty shops on King Street, with majority of them taking up residency on the southern end - from the Enmore Road intersection to St Peters Station.

YouTuber Rodney Clark tallied up 23 tobacco and convenience stores on the street, while he also found 47 clothing boutiques, described as "faceless vintage fashion pop-ups" by co-owner of Repressed Records, Nic Warn
