An audience largely receptive to Premier Danielle Smith’s vision of Alberta autonomy packed a Calgary-area venue for the final Alberta Next in-person town hall Monday night.

At about 1,100, the crowd at Spruce Meadows was also the largest of the 10 town hall gatherings and warmed quickly to the premier’s message of confronting Ottawa, some even saying the UCP government hasn’t gone far enough.

“The provinces should collect all of the tax revenues and only pay the federal government for the services we actually receive,” one man told the 14-person panel.

“The question is, why hasn’t this been done already?”

Minutes later, Smith said that would be “a wonderful idea but Quebec hasn’t even been able to figure how to do it.”
