Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) general secretary Bushi Anand and joint secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar moved the Madras High Court on Tuesday seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives during the campaign of party chief Vijay.

The plea follows an FIR filed against them on Monday, which also led to the arrest of party district secretary Mathiyazhagan. Another TVK functionary, Masi Pounraj, was also taken into custody on Tuesday.

In their anticipatory bail plea, accessed by India Today, TVK claimed that insufficient police deployment was the primary cause of the incident. The petition stated that the power supply was cut just five minutes after Vijay began his speech and asserted that the tragedy could not be attributed to any wilful neglect by TVK off
