DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings were sloppy, slow and lethargic Monday in a 2-1 preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins at Little Caesars Arena.

That’s a bit surprising with several young players in the lineup trying to make an impression, perhaps even earn a roster spot.

But don’t blame this on the youth, coach Todd McLellan said.

“They (young players) are working and sometimes they’re tired. It’s not always going to work,” McLellan said. “Some of the older players have to get their games going quickly. A week from (Thursday), we’re playing against really, really good teams (season opener vs. Montreal).
