For years, ghee has enjoyed a revered place in Indian kitchens, celebrated for its rich flavour, cultural significance, and supposed health benefits. In recent times, however, it has been at the centre of heated debates on social media.
Advocates promote ghee as a "superfood" said to reduce cholesterol, aid weight loss, and improve gut health, but many doctors and researchers argue otherwise.
Recently, liver specialist Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, known online as The Liver Doc, weighed in on the discussion. In a post, he wrote: “The health claims for ghee are unsubstantiated: assertion that ghee is a ‘superfood’ capable of reducing cholesterol, promoting weight loss, and acting as a superior gut-health agent is not supported by clinical evidence."
