Bihar's final voter list has been released by the Election Commission (EC) following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. The updated electoral roll, now available on the EC's official website, shows a total of 7,41,92,357 registered voters in the state. This includes 3,92,07,604 male voters, 3,49,82,828 female voters, and 1,725 third-gender voters.
The revision process, which lasted three months, resulted in the removal of approximately 68.5 lakh names from the previous list of 7.89 crore electors. The final roll reflects an increase of 18 lakh voters compared to the draft list published on August 1. The EC stated that the SIR aimed to ensure that no eligible voter was excluded while preventing ineligible individuals from being included.
Among the registered voters, 4,03,985 are aged 85 or older, while 14,01,150 are young voters aged between 18 and 19. Additionally, there are 7,20,709 voters with physical disabilities. The EC reported that over 36,000 voters submitted claims to add their names, while 2.17 lakh requested removals. Notices were issued to around three lakh voters for failing to provide necessary documentation.
The final electoral roll excludes names of deceased individuals, those who have moved out of the state, and duplicate registrations. Physical copies of the electoral rolls will be distributed to all District Election-cum-District Magistrates and recognized political parties.
The SIR process has faced criticism from opposition parties, who argue that it could disenfranchise legitimate voters. Some have filed petitions in the Supreme Court challenging the exercise. In response, the EC emphasized that the SIR was conducted in accordance with constitutional provisions and aimed to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the SIR, stating it was necessary to remove "infiltrators" from the voter list, a claim contested by opposition leaders.
