PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Representative and Providence mayoral candidate David Morales criticized current Mayor Brett Smiley in the wake of two recent reported masked ICE agent operations in the city.
Morales’ Monday statement comes on the heels of Mayor Smiley’s September 22 “A Safe Providence for All” executive order, which Rep. Morales called “performative.”
In the statement, Morales pointed to a reported September 23 operation where masked ICE agents detained a man outside of Rhode Island Superior Court in front of the man’s son.
“It took less than 24 hours for the mayor to fall flat on his promise to protect our immigrant neighbors in Providence as he stayed silent,” said Morales in the statement.
